I first wrote about Be the Choice – project leMonADE here. Since then, some exciting things have happened.
First, a reminder about what we are about. From www.bethechoice.org
In April 2011, Melanie Adrian was diagnosed with stage II invasive breast cancer. She was in her thirties, a law professor, surfer, hobby photographer, and had recently graduated from Harvard – she was devastated by the news. She sought out the surgical and oncological options that were available to treat the large tumor. Again and again, she was told by surgeon after surgeon in her hometown that aggressive surgery – in the form of a modified radical mastectomy – was her best option.
After she did her own extensive research, she did not have a modified radical mastectomy. She opted instead to have a skin-sparing mastectomy. This procedure removes the tumor but preserves the skin (and possibly nipple) and includes an immediate reconstruction.
Melanie’s choice is not every person’s preference in the treatment of breast cancer, but at Be the Choice we believe strongly that a full set of options should be presented to everyone at the time of diagnosis. It’s what we call informed consent. Get on board. Take charge of your health. Be the decision-maker. Be the Choice.
We are raising $24,000 to support the filming and production of a short movie (3-4 minutes) highlighting the surgical choices in the treatment of breast cancer. We will also use this money to support the work of two part-time paid positions. The successful candidates for these positions will work on disseminating the movie, managing content of social media pages, and raising awareness of the issues.
We are looking for a professional result that can travel the world. We have a team of surgeons and plastic surgeons who are consulting with us to make sure the science is right. We have a large, international network of people that support our mission and will help spread the word.
Please watch the video – I’m in it 🙂
And then I would love love love it if you go over to our indiegogo fundraising site.
Be the Choice!!
I went to the fundraising site, but it would only allow me to make a contribution using Paypal. I wanted to use VISA. Is there any way around this?
Hi Mom!
Yes, if you click through “Contribute” you will reach an option to pay by credit card, underneath the section where it says to login to your paypal account.
Thank you so much!!!!
Looking forward to seeing that video! This is such a cool project, Finola – something that will make a real difference in people’s lives. Best of luck to you guys with it.
