Today was a difficult day, but I am OK.
Today was the day my department told individuals whether their jobs were affected in the current downsizing in the federal government. There has been a lot of tension in the office leading up to today and it has been really hard. This morning was awful, but by noon we pretty much knew if we were safe or not. I feel for everyone who has been going through this, affected or not. It really really sucks.
I am OK and I hope that you are too.

Layoffs are horrible. Working in high tech, I was on both sides of the table… the one making the decisions, telling the employees of their fate, and then ultimately being told of my fate 8 years later. It is hard on everybody.

Thanks D, I have been through this in the private sector too, though I was lucky and was never laid off. I moved to government three years ago to avoid all of this. Ah well, nothing is guaranteed. Thanks for the hugs and for stopping by.
The tension is brutal eh? So far I don’t personally know anyone who’s been made redundant. (knock on wood) but I find black humour helps with the tension of not knowing. For example, I’ve personally changed the name of the the site they’ve created to explain the “workforce adjustment” from: “Moving Forward” to: “Moving Forward (without you)”.

I’m glad you’re safe. I don’t write about work on my blog so I haven’t written about the tension in our workplace too. My job was not affected, but the jobs of 25 friends and colleagues in my division were. And now we wait to see which of those 25 people will be chosen to fill the remaining 17 jobs. It’s horrible, they have to compete against each other for the positions. It’s like The Hunger Games for public servants.
