Creative Non-Fiction – Updated

Update: I think CBC heard me! The short story longlist will be announced February 20. There are 35 people on the list. Good luck all who entered!

Last Wednesday I submitted something that I wrote to CBC’s Canada Writes Creative Non-Fiction contest. Wednesday just before midnight was the due date; I didn’t have a lot of time to spare.

The hardest part about writing for this contest was to figure out what exactly creative non-fiction is. After combing through many different definitions, I concluded that it is essentially a blog post. It has to be completely true, but you have some creative license in how you write the narrative.

I ended up choosing a topic that is very personal in nature. As I was drafting it, I wasn’t sure I would even submit my piece, but in the end I did.

Now I just have to hope that I don’t win.

Also on the topic of Canada Writes, the website for the short story contest says to check back in February to see if you have made the longlist. Does anyone know when exactly?

This one, I would love to win, though I would be thrilled to just make the longlist.

ooohhh, I didn’t even know there WAS a long list. I entered too! I hope we both make the long list!

    Let’s hope we all do!

I submitted too, on the Wednesday! Nothing like leaving it until the last minute. I agree, it was just like writing a blog post but as it had to be 1200 words, it almost killed me. I just could not break myself of the 500-800 word blog post habit. In the end I was able to stretch it out to the minimum but GAH, it was not good. Ah well!

I must be way too wordy then because I had a hard time keeping mine below the maximum 1500 words. And I don’t believe for a minute that your entry wasn’t good – stiff competition I have in this contest. Good luck Lynn!
