It has been a mixed bag for training over the last couple of weeks. A week ago Saturday I ran 15 km on the treadmill, but in the week previous to that – nothing. It had been a crazy one, with my daughter’s 9th birthday and her bad cough that went with it (poor kiddo!), and a traveling husband too. I was only able to get the essentials done around the house, and so workouts were missed. Sometimes life can just suck it right out of you, can’t it.
After Tony got back from his trip and N’s cough improved, my Saturday run got things back on track. After my 15 km last weekend, I did my intervals on Monday and my tempo run on Wednesday. On top of that I did three strength training workouts at Marshall’s. Not bad.
Yesterday was to be 16 km on the treadmill. I was halfway through when the phone rang. It was important that I answer this call, and I thought I could take just a couple of minutes to walk and talk, and then do the other half of my run… Forty-five minutes later (!) when I was finally able to disconnect, my muscles and body felt cold and tired and so reluctantly, I packed it in for the day.
A few words about long runs on the treadmill: unlike a lot of people, I actually like the old hamster wheel. I can set up the radio, a movie, or my iPod, and zone out for the duration. I don’t have to worry about layers; I don‘t have to wear my water bottles and gels on a belt, and I don‘t get my shoes mucky. Not slipping and sliding on the unplowed paths and roads is a definite bonus too. I know I will have to get outside for some long runs soon because the treadmill is just not the same as the roads, but I’m happy to wait until it gets a little nicer out there.
Happy Trails Everyone.
