I Just Registered for the Half Marathon in May. Ack.

On Saturday I met with Andrea, my new trainer. She is going to develop a program for me so that I can finish the half marathon in May, without having to be whisked away by those helpful paramedics who like to hang around downtown on race weekend. I met Andrea a few years ago because she works at the gym at the company where I used to work. She is also the one who coached the speed training sessions at lunch hours, which I wrote about a few posts ago.

Andrea is charming and sweet, and any exercise class I have ever taken with her made me feel strong and motivated. She was never condescending (like some of the instructors at Goodlife can be), and she always made the people in her classes feel really good about themselves. Andrea is super fit – strong and powerful, and she is always out running or on her bike and enjoying life outdoors.

Because I have been in classes with Andrea before, she knows a bit about my strengths and weaknesses, and I’m talking literally here, so we talked about that quite a bit when we met. I’m the right shape for running, even though there are some squashy bits right now that I could stand to trim a little. But I don’t have very much power. My arms are scrawny, and my core is not so tight. I am looking for an overall program that will not only help me to complete the half marathon, but will also lead to better overall fitness. The program will focus on running, but will also incorporate strength exercises, particularly for my legs so that I will have more power.

Andrea listened carefully, and it was clear she wanted to design something specifically for me so that I can meet my particular goals. I can’t wait until we meet again so that I can get all the details of where I need to go from here. I believe in Andrea, that she will help me finish this race, and I believe in myself that I can do this.

Good for you! I am absolutely inspired by marthoners and halfers. I'll be there, watching and cheering and blogging from the sidelines.
